Responsibilities

  • Coordinates the scientific acquisition and analysis of imaging data for IRF-Frederick studies by leveraging expertise in advanced multimodality imaging technologies such as PET, SPECT, CT, MRI and optical imaging to effectively work within a BSL-4 laboratory to investigate viral infectious diseases in small animal and nonhuman primate models.
  • Consults with leadership, scientific staff, and the Government to ensure scientific objectives are accomplished.
  • Collaborates and coordinates extensively with multidisciplinary teams in immunology, pathology, virology, machine learning/AI, and external research groups.
  • Collaborates with technologists in support of the imaging infrastructure in the BSL-4 environment and the control rooms.
  • Develops, optimizes, and implements multimodality imaging acquisition and analysis protocols.
  • Deliver high-quality data through effective data organization, impactful visualization, and clear communication, contributing to peer-reviewed publications and presentations at national and international scientific conferences.
  • Proficient in advanced image analysis, including segmentation, quantification, and visualization of multimodal imaging data. Experience in the use of clinical Philips 3T MRI and PET/CT systems, preclinical Milabs vector 4 modal system, MR solutions preclinical PET/MRI and Mediso LFER PET/CT systems preferred.
  • Experience in the use of the following software platforms is a plus: MIM, PMOD, Imalytics, InterView Fusion, ImageJ, Spotfire, GraphPad Prism is preferred.
  • DICOM data manipulation experience desired.
  • Advises leadership on imaging hardware/software upgrades, maintenance, and technological advances.
  • Plans, coordinates, and conducts approved projects at the direction of the Government.
  • May direct day to day functions of IRF-Frederick scientific work; provides guidance on experimental design and implementation and strives to quickly resolve problems.
  • Communicates progress or problems with approved programs and projects to IRF-Frederick contract and Government leadership.
  • Provides written progress updates as stated in Reports and Deliverables section (Delivery Schedule).
  • Maintains state-of-the-art knowledge of new developments in the in vivo imaging field.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering or equivalent degree in a related field.
  • A minimum of fifteen (15) years of related experience.
  • Imaging experience in maximum containment is strongly desired.
  • Previous recent BSL-4 experience preferred.

  • Will be required to be in contact with small animals (rodents, rabbits, ferrets, etc.), nonhuman primates (macaques, African green monkeys, marmosets, etc.), nonhuman primate tissues, human blood or other body fluids, and radiation.
  • Will have contact with rabies virus, SIV, Varicella virus, and Orthopox virus (wild and attenuated).
  • Will work with corrosive substances, plastics, and solvents.
  • Required to have contact with the following Tier 1 Select Agents: Ebola Virus, Monkeypox virus, most risk group 4 (BSL4) select agent viruses, and some risk group 3 (BSL3) select agent viruses.
  • Must be able to wear personal protective equipment (PPE), including gloves, face shields/goggles, safety glasses, lab coat, Ear plugs/muffs, clean room uniform, impervious suit, disposable dust/surgical mask, and respirator (Disposable Respirator Mask N, P, R –95, 99,100, Powered Air Purified Respirator (PAPR), and positive-pressure suit.
