Responsibilities

  • Perform research experiments with BSL-2 pathogens.
  • Perform work and be comfortable with handling small lab animals (mice).
  • Perform infections in and harvest tissues from mice in ABSL-2 facility.
  • Perform subcutaneous, intraperitoneal, intramuscular, retroorbital, and intranasal inoculations in mice in ABSL-2 facility.
  • Process collected tissues for downstream assays, including but not limited to tissue homogenization, tissue digestion and immunostaining, virus titration, and RNA extraction.
  • Perform a wide variety of procedures and techniques which may include but are not limited to: aseptic technique and culture of immortalized cell lines.
  • Perform molecular biology and immunological techniques, including but not limited to nucleic acid extraction, PCR, RT-qPCR, ELISA and gel electrophoresis.
  • Assist with ordering supplies and reagents for the lab.
  • Maintain lab viral stocks and inventory.
  • Assist with establishing protocols or instruction/SOP and maintain accurate experimental logs, with attention to detail.
  • Strictly adhere to all safety in the lab and maintain any necessary certifications and trainings.
  • Communicate and work as a team and interact with other laboratory personnel, having strong interpersonal skills. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • BS/BA degree with at least three (3) years of experience.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience working in a laboratory setting.
  • Requires poxvirus vaccination.
  • Experience using MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, is required.

  • Ability to lift or carry less than 25 pounds, push or pull less than 25 pounds, reach above shoulder level, and use both hands.
  • Will be required to stand or walk more than 25 of 30 min.
  • Must have depth perception, distinguish basic colors, and perform repetitive activities.
  • Ability to work alone and closely with others, work protracted or irregular hours, work around machinery with moving parts, and with hands in water.
  • Will be required to be in contact with small animals (fish birds, rodents, etc.).
  • Will work with aerosols and solvents.
  • Must be able to wear personal protective equipment (PPE), including gloves, face shields/goggles, safety glasses, lab coat, clean room uniform, impervious suit, disposable dust/surgical mask, and respirator (powered air-purifying respirator, PAPR).
