Responsibilities

  • Support highly collaborative research in high-containment BSL-3 facilities including SARSCoV-2, influenza, MERS, and other priority pathogens.
  • Perform a wide variety of complex experimental procedures involving sterile cell culture techniques such as passaging, cryopreservation, maintenance, etc. of eukaryotic primary and established cell lines.
  • Maintain general lab upkeep, such as updating biospecimen repository databases for clinical specimens or lab derived samples, maintain sample transfer and removal logs, maintain records for BSL-3 for lab users.
  • Perform lab research work in BSL-3 laboratories, able to complete necessary training and testing for BSL-3 laboratory clearance.
  • Keep up-to-date and follow protocols in the production of laboratory reagents.
  • Perform standard virological techniques that include virus enumeration (plaque and TCID50 assays) viral stock preparation, virus concentration and purification, scale-up, and characterization.
  • Maintain detailed records of experiments, analyze data and present, oral or written results to others at NIH or for publication.
  • Assist with ordering scientific reagents and equipment, including obtaining price quotes, tracking orders, inventory of materials, and restocking the laboratory.
  • Maintain a safe workplace: must be aware of and adhere to appropriate safety and occupational health rules and regulations.
  • Work as part of a team with well-developed written and oral communication skills.
  • Assist and support mammalian tissue culture and laboratory organization and operations with the ability to work in a BSL-3.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • All support positions required a minimum of a BS degree; some require a MS, MD, or Ph.D.
  • The education, skills and relevant years of experience required for each support position are consistent with those identified as the minimum requirements for the labor categories specified in the contract.
  • Bachelor’s Degree with a minimum of 3 years’ experience or a Master’s Degree. For candidates with a Master’s Degree, a thesis is preferred.
  • Documentation of BSL-3 or BSL-4 experience and training is required for all candidates.
  • Strict adherence to all safety requirements and protocols in a high containment BSL-3 laboratory environment.
  • Must be able to wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment including a PAPR breathing air hood.
  • Must be able to read, write, and understand English.
  • Must be able to receive required vaccinations.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office.
  • Capacity to obtain and maintain a NIH Tier 3 elevated security clearance required for work in high containment laboratories and maintain active status in good standing in the NIH Biosurety program.
  • Willingness and ability to work flexible hours when experimental needs require it.
  • Must be able to work both independently and in a team environment.

  • Will be required to work in contact with small animals, large animals, nonhuman primates, nonhuman primate tissues, human blood or other bodily fluids, radiation, rabies virus, monkeypox, and wild and recombinant orthopox viruses.
  • Will be in contact with aerosols, corrosive substances, plastics, petrolium products, and solvents.
  • Must be able to wear personal protective equipment (PPE), including gloves, face shields/goggles, safety glasses, lab coat, clean room uniform, impervious suit, disposable dust/surgical mask, and Powered Air Purified Respirator (PAPR). respirator.
