    CAMRIS International is seeking an Animal Surgical Technican to support the 59th Medical Wing at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland. The 59th Medical Wing, located at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, is the Air Force's premier healthcare, medical education and research, and readiness wing. The wing's vision is "Exemplary Care, Global Response." Its mission is to optimize readiness and patient-centered care through collaborative health delivery, education, training and research.


    The 59th Clinical Research Division (59th CRD) is the largest Clinical Investigation Facility in the Air Force Medical Service (AFMS) and is a free standing facility and vivarium. The division supports health sciences education to develop the Military Health Service Force and clinical investigations for the advancement of medical science and its military and nonmilitary application towards patients. 


    *This is a forecasted position and it is contingent upon contract award. 


    • Assist as a sterile or non-sterile member of the Surgical Research Team and act as the non-sterile circulator during surgical procedures.
    • Serve as an assistant to the veterinary anesthetist with responsibility to assess the biologic and physical status of any animal to be anesthetized.
    • Provide critical care assistance to the veterinary surgeon during veterinary research protocols and training projects and safely and effectively restrains, handles, and transports animals.
    • Perform general procedures in the pre-operative area, surgical suite, post-op recovery area, or animal housing facility.
    • Handle and prepare surgical specimens (tissue/blood samples, etc).
    • Assist the supervisor with tasks and procedures involving use of determining or selecting the most effective approach to varied and diverse situations.
    • Insure animals are prepared for surgery by following all the necessary procedures during the pre-operative stage 
    • Operate steam sterilizers and ultrasonic cleaner and maintains sterility of surgical supplies and instruments through proper storage.
    • Assemble/Operate surgical equipment to include but not limited to physiologic monitors, electric or pneumatic saws, drills, defibrillators, anesthesia machines, hypo/hyperthermia units, electro-surgical machines and amps.
    • Assist in safely transporting, handling, and restraining animals according to established department operating instructions.
    • Assist in performing behavioral tests on animals using various procedures as identified in specific research protocols.
    • Support hyperbaric medicine operations by assisting in the preparation of animal subjects for research procedures.
    • Operate radiographic equipment and assist in special radiographic procedures and fluoroscopy, including sedating, anesthetizing and restraining of animal for the procedure.
    • Compile and enter data into computer databases as required by specific protocols.
    • Assist in protocols involving the Hypobaric/Hyperbaric chamber.


    • Two years of experience performing surgery required.
    • One year experience as a sterile surgical scrub tech required.
    • Experience of mathematics to perform such tasks as dose calculations.
    • Experience of infection control as it relates to cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization in the surgical environment.
    • Experience of database creation and maintenance using computer based spreadsheets or databases (i.e., Microsoft Excel/Access).
    • Possess knowledge of sound research design and implementation 
    • Be able to help the research team identify problems and formulate solutions.
    • Extensive knowledge of Animal Care procedures including pre and post-operative care and the use of anesthesia.
